The Process - Cliff's Notes Version
- Define your career and job search goals and priorities (consider yourself and family).
- Job Location - Start researching job opportunities (a.) in the locations where you’d like to live (once you have decided where you want to live) versus (b.) chasing the job you want.
- Write your general starting-point Cover Letter (CL) - get it reviewed.
- Establish, update, organize your Curriculum Vitae (CV) - get it reviewed.
- Get (establish) professional references with their known approval - create a document.
- Start to actively look for jobs and apply. Prepare your CL/CV and make them specific to the job(s) you are applying to, from directing the CL to (a.) a specific person to the practice you are applying and (b.) for the specific type of practice you are applying to (private practice DPM vs. Ortho, vs. hospital, vs. academic)
- Prepare for any reply from an applied-to practice and prepare for interview(s) - hopefully many!
- Have a good site visit / interview.
- Consider each job opportunity’s practice type, compensation package, location/community, etc.
- Select which opportunity is the best fit for you, your goals and priorities (see #1).
- Negotiate your contract.
- Begin pre-job preparation.
